Google is Black Now they Turned the Lights Out

I have been using Google all morning logged in to “my account” but when I just opened a new IE window without being logged in, yes I use Firefox mostly; I noticed that the Google homepage was black. For a second Google having the lights out startled me. I got the same feeling that I unusually get when I come out of work and can’t find my car. Somehow things just felt different and I was a little taken back.

But alas, Google did it for a philanthropic reason as they sometimes do. Google is trying to raise awareness for earth hour where on Saturday, March 29, 2008; Earth Hour take the initiative to invites people around the world to turn off their lights for one hour – from 8:00pm to 9:00pm in their local time zone. On this day, cities around the world, including Copenhagen, Chicago, Melbourne, Dubai, and Tel Aviv, will hold events to acknowledge their commitment to energy conservation.

To this search marketer, as long as Google keeps doing such philanthropic things such as these, I will never let them lose market share to competitors such as yahoo, or Microsoft, even if they do hurt my income from time to time with their constant algorithm changes.
